Michigan Scholastic Esports

I first became involved in esports through teaching a video game design course. My administration was eager to start a program, so we visited Lawrence Tech to learn more about the technology and structure of successful teams. From there, stepping into the role of coach felt natural, especially with players who were eager to help me learn along the way. It has been incredible to see students from all different backgrounds come together, support one another, and grow as a team. What I love most about esports is the community. From the very beginning, other coaches generously shared resources, advice, and encouragement to help us get started. That same spirit carries over to the players, who compete fiercely but also help each other improve. I have seen students offer tips, scrimmage with their opponents, and celebrate each other’s growth in ways that are rare in traditional sports. I wanted to become a Super Coach so I could give back the same way others supported me. From troubleshooting technology to sharing gameplay strategies, my peers made those early years far less overwhelming. Now, I want to be that same source of guidance for new coaches as they launch and grow their own programs.
